Chapter 5 Using Tools to Support Connected Learning

Chapter 5 was titled Using Tools to Support Connected Learning. Utilization of tools and technology in today's day and age is so necessary as we live in a world that is consistently adapting to all the new platforms and technologies that are rolled out daily. Some of these technologies have been established for years, and others are up and rising. However, these tools are not necessarily helpful unless the individuals using them understand the context in which the tools can best improve their learning. Otherwise, these tools can simply be a distraction. Some of the tools that were analyzed in Chapter 5 included social bookmarking, which allows you to bookmark the videos that are most important to you and can help, as many are just simply distractions.

One of my favorite topics to talk about in this chapter has to be the tools for connecting in collaborating. I feel like the tools for connecting in collaborating are going to be most useful in my choice of career. I plan on going into the healthcare field. I will be your future Chiropractor. The utilization of things like blogs RSS readers, podcasts, wikis, and Google documents will be of great assistance to me as a chiropractor. By reading through blogs written by other Chiropractors and people within the healthcare field, listening to podcasts and all the wonderful information that can be shared, and these audio formats on micro Twitter, Chiropractors, universities, and students, I will be in the sense of expansion at all times.

Also, as we all know, tools for social networking are major and can help us so much throughout our educational careers, as well as in our professions. Collaborating with individuals, worldwide, students within our universities, and family to always feel connected, even when we are far is very important through education and all the way into our professions. I know that several individuals in this class are going into the educational field. I felt as if a real dynamic tool spoken about is Classroom 2.0 as this is a social network that is composed of nearly 58,000 educators interested in using Web 2.0 applications within education. I found that to be intriguing as that is growing massive. It'll take us time to become familiar with all the tools that are discussed in this chapter. By adapting to these new technologies and adopting the ideas and ideology spoken about within this chapter can lead to new concepts of learning within our communities and allow us an opportunity to connect and share with students in education and professionals in our careers. What do you think was the most useful tool or group of tools in this chapter for you and your career choice?

  1. You did a great job explaining how tools like social bookmarking and blogging make it easier for professionals to connect and learn from each other. The breakdown of each tool’s purpose and benefits, like staying organized with Diigo or building a community through blogging, makes it clear how valuable these can be for anyone’s career. For my specific career, I thought Twitter was the most important because of the connections you can make. Also on Twitter, you can see first hand all different types of marketing and how well they are taken.

  2. I completely agree that social networking tools are essential for both education and our careers. Classroom 2.0 is a great example, and it's amazing how it brings together so many educators to share ideas. All of the tools listed help organize resources and build a personal learning network (PLN), which is key for staying connected and up-to-date.

  4. I love your ability to directly connect the positive uses of these networking tools to your career as a chiropractor. "Living in the sense of expansion" is such a well put away to describe your use of every resource available to you. I'm totally using that phrase at work, Great response!
What do you think is a good way to introduce/familiarize yourself with these new tools when beginning your career with newfound information?
